Uses
Treatment of hypovolaemia
Dosage
Adults
Dosage and infusion rates should be adjusted depending on the requirements of the individual patient. Dosage will depend on the size of the patient, severity of trauma or illness and on continuing fluid and protein loss.
Dosage should always be based on circulating blood volume and not only plasma albumin levels.
In patients undergoing plasma exchange the infusion rate should be adjusted to the rate of removal.
Children
The posology in children and adolescents (0 to 18 years) should be adjusted to the patient's individual requirements.
Administration
For intravenous infusion.
The manufacturers of some brands of human albumin solution 20% state that the product may be diluted with an isotonic infusion solution such as sodium chloride 0.9% infusion or glucose 5% infusion.

Haemorrhagic diathesis
Restricted potassium intake
Restricted sodium intake
Severe traumatic brain injury
Anuria
History of cardiac disorder
Hypertension
Increased capillary permeability
Oesophageal varices
Pregnancy
Pulmonary oedema
Severe anaemia
Sodium content of formulation may be significant
Maintain adequate hydration during therapy
Restore electrolyte & fluid balance in case of dehydration
Derived from human proteins - transmission of infective agents possible
Consider hepatitis A & B vaccinations if patient receives product regularly
Record name and batch number of administered product
Stop infusion immediately if symptoms of cardiovascular overload appear
Monitor blood pressure
Monitor central venous pressure
Monitor coagulation values
Monitor fluid balance
Monitor haematocrit values
Monitor haemoglobin levels
Monitor heart rate
Monitor patients with cardiovascular disease
Monitor respiratory function
Monitor serum electrolytes
Monitor to prevent cardiovascular overload
Monitor to prevent hypervolaemia
Monitor urine output
Management of cases of shock should follow current medical standards
Discontinue if allergic reaction occurs
Discontinue if anaphylactoid reaction occurs
Discontinue if pulmonary oedema occurs
Discontinue if rise in blood pressure occurs
Sodium and potassium content may vary in each product or batch of products.
Pregnancy and Lactation
Pregnancy
Use human albumin with caution during pregnancy.
The manufacturers states that no adverse effects during pregnancy are anticipated. At the time of writing there is limited published information regarding the use of human albumin during pregnancy.
Lactation
Human albumin is considered safe for use during breastfeeding, as it is a normal constituent of human blood.

Overdosage
